In my quest to better understand the academic mystery genre, I began to do some research, and in doing so, I came across an article that I found helpful and interesting. Maybe it will be helpful for others as well. So here it is: http://januarymagazine.com/features/murddegrees.html
It confirmed my belief that there are a range of reasons to use the academic setting for a mystery, due to the many people and possibilities for motive in academic settings.

Nice job on doing extra research on your topic. So now we see that academic mystery is mostly focused on the setting.
I like how the article stated one of the benefits of having a mystery in an academic setting as, "The academic mystery is, by its very nature, a cozy." Thus, with all the endless possibilities of a school/campus, it is still a small and limited area, which might make it easier for authors to plan out the mystery and the plot, because any suspects for a crime would most likely be from the school.
While, on the other hand, if a mystery takes place outside of an academic setting, or any other controlled setting, it may not be as easy to slim down the possible suspects.
